Dr. Thomas Vrain is chief of cardiac surgery at a Los Angeles hospital. At a medical conference Vrain meets Dr. Gehring who has been developing a revolutionary artificial heart. They reach the stage when it's time for the heart to be tested on a human. Carol, a 21-year-old patient has always suffered from a heart problem and suddenly gets worse. Vrain decides to operate - however her heart is too severely damaged and he realizes she will die. With her life in the balance, he decides to insert the artificial heart. The operation is a success, but has far-reaching effects on both Carol and Vrain.
